Archological Findings

Odin's Slate found on the site of Hyatt Centric

Drawing pictures has been an important way to share history and stories for thousands of years.

Of the many unique objects found among the 11th century Viking village, the most significant and eye-catching find was a rare example of graffiti art carved onto a piece of slate depicting a figure on a horse with a shield, sword and two birds present.

Our research suggests the drawing most likely depicts the Norse God Odin. According to mythology Odin sacrificed an eye for wisdom and relied upon two ravens, Huginn and Muninn (pronounced Hoo-gin and Moo-nin), to keep him informed of all that happened in the entire world.

On the reverse of the slate there is clear lettering and as so few would have been literate at that time it reinforces that this piece of art must have been created by a very learned individual.
