Archological Findings

Key

What secrets could this key hold?

The wealth of important archaeological artefacts uncovered during construction sparked dozens of questions among the team here at Hyatt Centric, The Liberties Dublin as we wondered about the many different lives and industries that have occupied the site before us.

Of all the artefacts that were found none prompted more unanswered questions than this elaborate 12th century copper alloy key. Impressive for both its age and excellent state of preservation, we have spent a lot of time musing over the possible treasures held beyond the lock this key was made to open.

While we can’t say for certain what this key was used for, we do know that during the 12th century it was the local blacksmith that would have been responsible for making keys and other intricate metal items such as iron tools, hinges, locks and horseshoes.
